(Ottawa) The surge of the COVID-19 pandemic has jumped the number of Canadians working from their homes, but the vast majority say they are at least as productive at home as in their regular workplace.

Statistics Canada illustrates Thursday how much the phenomenon has grown in five years: at the start of 2021, 32% of Canadian employees aged 15 to 69 worked most of their working hours from home, compared at only 4% in 2016.

The most recent Labor Force Survey showed 3.1 million Canadians were temporarily working at home last February.

Of all new teleworkers, 90% reported doing at least as much work per hour at home as before at their workplace, regardless of age, gender, education level, marital status , industry, occupation and whether or not they have children.

Meanwhile, 58% said they do about the same amount of work.

Finally, 32% said they did more work per hour. Among the latter, a large number work in public administration.

Statistics Canada also observed that overall, 35% of all new teleworkers reported working more hours per day, managers in greater proportions at 51%.

Regarding barriers to productivity, employees who reported doing less work per hour at home mentioned having to care for children or other family members, challenges related to the job. ‘Access to information or devices, having to work harder to get results, inappropriate workspace or difficulty with internet speed.

Among Canadians, 41% said they would prefer to work about half of their hours at home, while 39% would prefer to spend most or all of their working hours at home. The remaining 20% ​​would prefer to work outside the home.
