An error in an American factory caused Johnson & Johnson to lose… 15 million doses of vaccine.

This is the kind of blunder we could do without in the midst of a pandemic. A few weeks ago, a mistake made by workers at a plant in Baltimore, United States, wasted no less than 15 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine at the Johnson & Johnson company.

As reported by our colleagues at the New York Times, employees would have confused ingredients necessary to make the vaccine. If Johnson & Johnson did not confirm the figure of 15 million, they explained that quality control had identified “a batch of drug substance not reaching quality standards” in its partner Emergent BioSolutions.

The company nevertheless wanted to reassure citizens. “This batch has never been sent to the filling and finishing stages of our manufacturing process,” explained the firm. The doses that are currently delivered to the United States would not be affected by this waste at this time. They come from the Netherlands. But this could still have an impact on future deliveries.
