Coronavirus: more than 10,000 reports of side effects after the injection of a vaccine in Belgium

The vast majority of reports concerned known and reported side effects.

Dsince the start of the vaccination campaign in Belgium, 10,040 reports of side effects have been communicated following an injection of a vaccine against the coronavirus, according to the weekly report of the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP).

These are figures ending on April 6. As of this date, 1,502,795 people had received at least one dose of vaccine against Covid-19. 10,040 reports of side effects were communicated via the Covid online form.

Of these, 3,082 were registered in the European pharmacovigilance database EudraVigilance. Of these side effects, the vast majority of reports were of fever, muscle pain, feeling sick and injection site reactions. “These reactions are known side effects and are described in the package leaflet. These are normal reactions that indicate the activation of the immune system. They generally disappear after two days, ”emphasizes the FAMHP.

More than 1,800 serious reports

Side effects were seen more frequently with the second dose in Pfizer / BioNtech and the first dose in AstraZeneca.

1,899 reports were considered serious due to temporary incapacity for work or the inability to leave home due to fever, muscle pain, malaise and injection site reactions.

A total of 70 reports concerned a death. According to the FAMHP, however, no formal causal relationship with a Covid-19 vaccine has so far been established.

The FAMHP also stresses that this information concerns suspected side effects. That is, medical events seen after using a vaccine, but not necessarily related or caused by the vaccine.
