This increase in new cases in Estrie occurs Thursday in a context where Quebec observed a significant jump in the number of COVID-19 infections on Thursday, while 1,609 new cases and nine additional deaths were reported. The number of hospitalizations is again on a sharp rise as 566 patients are hospitalized due to COVID-19, including 132 in intensive care.

“The last time that Quebec had more than 1,600 cases, it was January 21 (1,802 cases)”, wrote the Minister of Health Christian Dubé on Twitter.

At that time, Quebec was at the peak of the second wave of the pandemic.

The presence of variants is also increasing. The Eastern Townships have grown from 23 to 24 confirmed Great Britain variants in the past 24 hours, as screening across all positive COVID-19 tests has identified 18 more presumptive variants for a total of 185.

The death toll has remained stable at 323 people who have died of complications from the virus since the start of the pandemic.
