Here is that the heavy toll of Thursday has just crushed this data, while 436 people received a positive diagnosis in one day. In all of Quebec, this is the largest increase of the day, even Montreal has below 400 cases.
A few hours before François Legault’s press conference, the explosion of cases in the region is ominous. Emergency measures that were to end on April 12 could be extended.
More affected by variants
The increase is also not unrelated to the fact that the Capitale-Nationale also takes pride of place in the regions of the province most affected by variants.
Per 100,000 inhabitants, the rate of variants detected exceeds 300. In comparison, the Outaouais and Laval, which follow the Capitale-Nationale, show rates of 221.8 and 217.2 cases of variants per 100,000 inhabitants.
More contagious and more transmissible, variants spread more quickly and easily in the community. This reality is also felt in screening centers, where more and more people tested are obtaining a positive result.
On Wednesday, when 5,044 samples were taken, the positivity rate reached 7.9%, among the highest since the start of the pandemic. It was still around 2% just over two weeks ago.
Three deaths were added compared to the day before. The Capitale-Nationale therefore has 26,410 confirmed cases since March 2020, as well as 1,027 deaths.
In Chaudière-Appalaches, the number of reported cases is also increasing.
The region has been showing more than 100 daily infections for five days now.
The largest increase was recorded on Thursday, with 179 cases occurring in the past 24 hours. They bring the total to 13,254 since the start of the pandemic.
The National Institute of Public Health declares the presence of 696 cases associated with a variant strain of the virus.
Faced with this scenario, the “dark red” that colors the region is likely to last longer than expected. This is what the Prime Minister could say as early as 5:00 p.m.
No new deaths have also occurred in the territory, the victims of COVID-19 still number 291.
Vaccination open to people aged 60 and over
People aged 60 and over have been authorized everywhere in Quebec to register for their COVID-19 vaccine since Thursday morning.
The administration of doses of AstraZeneca without appointment to citizens aged 55 to 79 is also started. During this first day, in Quebec and in Chaudière-Appalaches, the volunteers were present at dawn to make sure they had their place.
