Without really forcing or shining, the team of France Espoirs, in the wake of a Guendouzi in captain mode, dominated Iceland to see the quarter-finals of the Euro.
Decreased by several absences of players summoned with the A team, Iceland could not really fight against the Bleuets. On the rare forays into the French camp, Anderson (our loser of this match) and others never found sufficient precision to make Lafont and his teammates tremble. On the other side of the field, in a defense to five, Finnsson, author of a nasty tackle on Tchouaméni, and the Icelanders were not unworthy of solidity question, with only two shots on target conceded (for two goals). But it would have taken more consistency in concentration to consider a draw. A bit like Palmason, after all. The number 2 was able to illustrate himself, on one side, by saving on his line (33rd), while being, on the other, absolutely spectator on the splendid in-depth pass from Mouassa to Edouard. Behind, the Celtic striker made a final bresk (0-2, 38th). Three defeats in three matches for the Icelanders who will not see the final phase at the end of May.
Gouiri (4) did not wake up
Originally, it is true, of a few movements to try to shake his own during the inaugural defeat against Denmark (0-1), Amine Gouiri had not reacted behind in front of the Russians, delivering any match, with significant waste. And while Truffert or Soumare, very interesting in front of Russia, were not renewed by Ripoll against Iceland, Gouiri, him, kept the confidence of his coach. But the Niçois did not know how to seize this new chance to find the way to the goal or to be decisive. Less comfortable, obviously, with Maouassa behind his back, the former OL did try a few dribbles to infiltrate an Icelandic defense largely at his level. But it was without success. Frustrating for the one who wears the Gym this season, and who may have lost a few points in Ripoll’s mind for the quarter-finals of the Euro.
Tchouaméni (not rated, replaced in the 18th by Soumaré, 6)
Referee: M. Visser (BEL), 7.
Match Rating: 10/20.
