Music streaming service Spotify is reportedly busy rolling out voice recognition to users of its mobile app. This is what American reports reveal.

Spotify has been preparing its own smart assistant since 2019, which was initially supposed to allow premium users to listen to their music and podcasts in the car using the ‘Hey Spotify’ voice command, via special hardware. The latter, tentatively called ‘Car Thing’, does not yet exist, but the function was nevertheless partially extended last year to the app for premium users. Now it looks like it’s being rolled out more widely, although Spotify is keeping it pretty low-key on the subject.

‘Hey Spotify’

Sites such as GSM Arena report that Android users are informed about the new feature. They are asked to allow Spotify to access the mic, then say ‘Hey Spotify, Play my Favorite Song’, which would activate the function. On iOS, this function would also appear on several devices and this, in the form of a small ‘micro’ button next to the search dial. It would be made available to both paid and free users.

Once the feature is enabled and permission is granted, you will be able to control Spotify by voice, according to reports. You can ask to play the music of your favorite artist and to allow pauses in the songs, to skip them, etc. It will obviously also be possible to deactivate the authorization.

It’s currently unclear whether this is a phased rollout or some kind of test for certain geographies. A brief survey to the editorial staff reveals that with us, the app has not yet been extended by the voice function.
