The bad joke of Swiss high school students caused a wave of panic in a high school in Basel. The offenders will be penalized. Three high school students from the city of Basel, Switzerland, will be subject to disciplinary action after falsifying text messages from the national application for monitoring COVID-19 cases, suggesting that they were contaminated with the coronavirus in order to to skip classes.
The deception resulted in a mandatory 10-day quarantine for 25 students of the Kirschgarten high school in Basel. Several teachers were also affected by the incident, just before spring break in March.
“This is not just a childish prank, it is a serious incident,” Simon Thiriet, spokesperson for the Basel Department of Education, told Swiss newspaper Blick.
The school plans to prosecute the students concerned for falsifying “documents relating to health” but does not plan to expel them.
The high school students are in a “difficult situation” because of the pandemic, but this does not excuse the behavior of the three students, said Simon Thiriet.
